🇪🇹 Memorial Service at the Grave of Ethiopia’s First Pilot

The brotherhood of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Solovetsky Stauropegial Monastery served a Panikhida (memorial service) at the grave of Mikhail Ivanovich Babicheff (Mishka Babicheff) — a Russian-Ethiopian aviation pioneer and one of the founders of the Ethiopian Air Force.

"Major Mishka Babicheff," reads the inscription on his gravestone at the Heroes' Cemetery besides the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa.

The son of Ivan Babichev, a Russian officer who arrived in Ethiopia in 1898, Mikhail dedicated his life to aviation. In 1930, he completed his first solo flight, subsequently underwent advanced training in France, and by 1935 became Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force and personal pilot to Emperor Haile Selassie I. From 1944 to 1947, Babicheff served as Ethiopia’s chargé d’affaires in the USSR — a figure who forged enduring historical ties between Russia and Ethiopia.

🇪🇹 Панихида на могиле первого эфиопского лётчика

Братия Спасо-Преображенского Соловецкого ставропигиального монастыря совершила панихиду на могиле Михаила Ивановича Бабичева (Мишки Бабичева) — русско-эфиопского пионера авиации и одного из основателей ВВС Эфиопии.

«Майор Мишка Бабичев» — гласит надпись на его могиле на Кладбище Героев у собора Святой Троицы в Аддис-Абебе.

Сын русского офицера Ивана Бабичева, прибывшего в Эфиопию в 1898 году, Михаил связал свою жизнь с авиацией. В 1930 году он совершил первый самостоятельный полёт, обучался во Франции, а в 1935 году стал командующим ВВС Эфиопии и личным пилотом императора Хайле Селассие I. В 1944–1947 годах Бабичев был поверенным в делах Эфиопии в СССР — человеком, связавшим историю России и Эфиопии.
